Condensate coolers are used in steam applications where the condensate is discharged for disposal. In this case, it was steam that had to be cooled down to condensate. The heat exchanger cools 3 barg of steam from 143ºC to about 80ºC and uses water of 60ºC.
We have chosen a standard unit for this; the coiled tubular heat exchanger. The advantage of this type of heat exchanger is that the flexible coil is wounded around a core and can therefore absorb thermal expansions and pressure surges by moving due to its flexibility. Since a condensate cooler is “flooded” to work (condensate water and steam in the heat exchanger, which can cause pressure surges), this is the right choice to prevent damage to the heat exchanger.
